Darrell Hill has a gift for observation...
Art connoisseurs consider Darrell
M. Hill “one of the finest bold impressionists alive today.” The subjects of
Hill’s paintings are as diverse as the Hawaiian paradise in which he lives –
beaches, florals, tropics, landscapes and beautiful native people – but the
"Hill touch" is unmistakable in each of his works. Strong
contrast, bold use of color, and light with surface texture are hallmarks of Hill’s
paintings. He has a gift for observation and the ability to paint with both
freshness and emotion. Darrell Hill paintings, which are featured in
collections worldwide, capture the moment of light that often reflects a story.
They are described as colorful and comforting, warm and inviting and sometimes,
courageous. As
demand for his work grew, it became necessary for Hill to devote his full
energies to gallery sales and the creation of larger paintings. Many of his
works are over nine feet. Since making that decision he has enjoyed outstanding
success in his career; which now spans more than two decades. In addition to
his beautiful work in oil, Hill also works in watercolor and drawing. Influential
in Hill’s work are such artists as Monet, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla,
Van Gough, Klimt and Gauguin. His paintings gratify serious collectors... The
interest in Hill's paintings from serious collectors is strong evidence that
his paintings will be recognized as an important and permanent part of the best
of American fine art created in this century. His paintings are included in
hundreds of private and public collections throughout the United States, Japan,
New Zealand, England, Norway and other European countries. Included among
Hill’s private collectors are many prominent individuals from the business
world, and perhaps most significantly, the art community itself. Darrell
Hill has had numerous successful one-man shows. His works have been featured at
exhibitions at prestigious locations throughout the Hawaiian islands as well as
galleries in California, Oregon
and Texas. These include Security National Bank; College of the Sequoias; Lahaina
Galleries in Newport Beach and San Francisco, CA and Bend, OR; and the Brooks
Institute School of Fine Arts in Santa Barbara, CA. His work was also selected
and featured in Salon International, Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, San
Antonio, TX. Hill
has generously provided paintings for non-profit organizations which include The
Pregnancy Center in Kona; Hawaii AIDs Center; Kona Community Hospital; Holualoa
Foundation for Arts and Culture; Kona Art Center; the Big Island Symphony and the
Kailua-Kona Library. Many publications have
featured Hill’s art in major page ads, including Southwest Art, Art &
Antiques, Veranda, Aloha Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Plein Air Magazine
which is devoted to the fine art of outdoor painting. His art also has appeared
on the cover of Art Guide Maui and Big Island Visitors magazine, and his studio
and art was featured in the
Japanese edition of Elle
magazine. Born
1941 in Hillsborough, Illinois, Hill was raised in California where he received
formal art instruction at the College of the Sequoias, Fresno State University
and Brooks Institute, School of Fine Art, in Santa Barbara. For 18 years, Hill
served as vice president and creative director for a major publishing company.
“From publishing to painting is not such a big leap,” Hill says. “After all,
everyone knows that a picture is worth a thousand words.” Currently
Darrell Hill and his wife Pat, who is also an artist, live in the quaint, turn-of-the-century
village of Holualoa, Hawaii where he is the past president of The Holualoa
Foundation for Art and Culture. Darrell Hill’s
originals and limited edition graphics are represented by Lahaina Gallery
